Sitges is "Fire Island" of Spain
(Tuesday, 08 July 2008) Written by Jim

Read all about Mike's latest trip to Spain and Italy... complete with more pics from one of MyGayStay's favorite travelers. Who knows, he may even be able to explain that thing on his head!

Sitges is a beach town about an hour’s train ride from Barcelona. It could be considered the “Fire Island” of Spain. Although it has a mix of gay and straight tourists, Sitges is clearly catered toward gays and lesbians.

After settling into your hotel, a typical day is spent at the beach. Don’t worry about being with mixed company as there is a gay beach and a straight beach. Remember, it is Europe, topless is allowed. However, the gay beach in Sitges is not nude—meaning the speedo type bathing suites the gays have an affinity toward will have to suffice. Once done at the beach you’ll want to hit up Parrott’s. It’s easy to spot as they have rainbow colored umbrellas.

The restaurant/bar is uniquely set up on both sides of the street allowing for a “catwalk” of sorts for the gays to walk down as they return from the beach and Parrot patrons to gawk at as they go by. Dinner is usually reserved for 10pm followed by a night of clubbing. There are more than a dozen places in which to party so you will find your scene somewhere. People on the beach often hand out flyers detailing parties and drink specials.

XXL and Organic are two of the bigger dance clubs. Don’t worry about a car—everything is in walking distance. If you like to shop (which gay doesn’t) then you will find store after store in which to buy the prefect tight shirt, jeans, shoes, belts, hats, etc. It ranges from high end to affordable. A hotel or a hostel (much cheaper) are available. Be warned, Hostels are no frills but for as little time as you spend in your room its worth it. Besides, it just means more money for shopping. I give Sitges a 9 out of 10 and it should be on your to do list when traveling to Barcelona or Spain for that matter. Weekends are best.
