Los AngelesA series of connected suburbs, and often called "the city without a center," it sometimes suffers from an undeserving bad rap. Because unlike New York--where you can leave the house without a plan and stumble onto any number of sumptuous choices just by walking around, in L.A. having fun means knowing where the action is. Once you have a gameplan, you'll be fine. Or as Glinda the good witch once said, if you want to get to your Oz (whatever your particular Oz may be), just "follow the yellow brick road!" Okay, so there are a few Oz's, depending on which version L.A. you want to experience. The good news is, L.A. is a gay-friendly town, so you can do them all without minding your Ps and Qs, OR your extra "S's". In short, this city is on the map mostly because of the the Hollywood film industry, and as Ellen said in this year's Academy Awards, "without blacks, gays and Jews", it wouldn't exist. No maiden voyage to Los Angeles is complete without atleast a fair sampling of tourist sightseeing. You HAVE to go to Hollywood Boulevard and see Mann's Chinese theater, check out the hand & footprints in the courtyard and the walk of fame down Hollywood Boulevard. You may wonder what all the fuss was about, and you may never want to do it again--but you have to do it once. Just give in and get it all out of the way on your first day-- go to the new complex on Hollywood & Highland where the Kodak theater is, grab lunch and buy some mugs & T-shirts for your friends. Have your picture taken with the Hollywood sign in the background. No matter what you do, you can't miss the gayness that is West Hollywood. With more hot boys than you can throw a designer bottle of water at, there is eye candy galore. If you prefer a different flavor, Silver Lake offers some stops and watering holes for bears, leather guys, and pretty much everybody else. - Scott Coblio |
